While they don't allow speed boats on the lake, there are excursion boats such as this lovely old paddle wheeler, the Canandaigua Lady, to tour you around this lovely lake. #FLXperience, #fingerlakestourism, #fingerlakes, #newyork, #lake,

If you look at a map of upstate New York you'll see why they call them "finger lakes." Indian legend says that a giant bear scraped its claws on the land and created these long, narrow and deep lakes. The first on the west is Canandaigua where this photo was taken. Many of the lake houses along the shore of this beautiful lake are large and ornate, but I was taken by this simple but gorgeous little summer cottage. #FLXperience, #fingerlakestourism, #fingerlakes, #newyork, #lake,

Much of the Erie Canal runs through buccolic countryside. You can rent boats and operate them yourself if you're interested in overnight trips. These small boats have sleeping and cooking facilities, and are easy to operate. #eriecanal, #lakeerie, #newyork, #FLXperience, MTWA2015

The Erie Canal is one of the most important reasons upstate New York became a thriving center of commerce. Built in 1825, for a century this waterway connected Albany on the Hudson to Lake Erie, which in turn allowed barges to move to and from the midwest on the great lakes. This mode of transport cut time between NewYork City and the Mississippi River by 2/3 and cost by 95%. No longer used for commercial traffic, it now is a wonderful vacation venue. #eriecanal, #barge, #river, #newyork, #erie, #lockport, ,
